Cannich Training Block
I don’t mind admitting that my legs were pretty sore after the D33 but by Monday of this week I was already looking ahead to training for the next few weeks. I’m not sure exactly where January and February went but there are literally a few weeks left before leaving for the USA.
The weather over the following weekend seemed reasonable so I gave some thought to a few days camping and running somewhere north, maybe Aviemore or Braemar. Then I remembered that I have on several occasions considered making the trip to Cannich in order to explore the Glen Affric area. I knew the campsite at Cannich would be open and that they also had a few pods at a very reasonable rate.
Not expecting very much so close to the weekend, I was very surprised to find one pod still available, so I booked it immediately for five nights from Friday 14th March to Wednesday 19th March. The pod contains an electric heater, a lamp and boasts a picnic bench, deck and firepit outside. Luxury!
So, I will be heading up during the day tomorrow.
I think it will be guaranteed that I will do the loop around Loch Affric, including the out and back to Allt Beithe Youth Hostel, although I believe the hostel doesn’t actually open until April. Aside from that, I will see what the higher-level snow conditions are like (fairly sparse I believe) before deciding on other outings. It would be good to get in some decent vertical training though and there are some fantastic ridge routes in the area.
In any event, four full days to play with although I could also factor a rest day in too, weather and legs dependent. The weather forecast is holding at present so should be a good one hopefully.
