<p>The following is the gear list for this trip.</p><p>The gear I selected for the trip was based on the tried and tested principle that my pack would be my aircraft 10kg carry-on and that what I carried would provide the vast majority of kit needed for the entire trip. </p><p>The pack is the Raidlight Ultra Legend 20. This is simply the best medium capacity running pack that I have come across. My kit overall would significantly stretch the capacity of the backpack alone, so I repeated what I did on the GR70 fastpack back in 2024 and strapped a long drybag to the bottom of the backpack. This works really well, especially if the drybag is used for light items, clothing in particular. This is the exact same set-up I had planned to use on the Highland Ultra next month so no harm in being thoroughly acquainted with it beforehand.</p><p>I went light and compact on the sleeping system, taking the Thermarest Hyperion 32 sleeping bag which compresses to a ridiculously small size considering it is a genuine zero-degree bag. It would be more than adequate for the few nights I might bivy.</p><p>I took a range of clothing layers for a wide variation in temperatures, from single figures at night to as high as low twenties. The prior weather forecasts were mixed and there was a high chance of rain throughout the week, so a decent waterproof jacket was essential as well as good drybags and a pack cover to keep everything as dry as possible. I would be able to launder clothing etc on the nights I had accommodation.</p><p>In terms of food, I would be able to supplement the calories I was carrying with meals, snacks etc from shops and cafes/restaurants I would come across every day. Thus, I  only carried running calories to ensure I had plenty to ration out over the days.</p><p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-5201 size-large" src="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Gear-final-867x1024.webp" alt="" width="867" height="1024" srcset="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Gear-final-867x1024.webp 867w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Gear-final-254x300.webp 254w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Gear-final-768x908.webp 768w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Gear-final-1300x1536.webp 1300w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Gear-final-1733x2048.webp 1733w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Gear-final-1000x1182.webp 1000w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Gear-final-230x272.webp 230w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Gear-final-350x414.webp 350w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Gear-final-480x567.webp 480w" sizes="(max-width: 867px) 100vw, 867px" /></p><ol><li>Raidlight Ultra Legend 20L pack</li><li>2 x 500ml soft flasks with 1 x Salomon XA filter</li><li>UD waistbelt pouch</li><li>Dyneema groundsheet</li><li>Thermarest Hyperion 32 sleeping bag</li><li>Sleeping bag liner</li><li>Dyneema drybag for sleeping bag, mat, liner and pillow</li><li>Nemo Tensor Elite Ultralight sleeping mat</li><li>Inflatable pillow</li><li>Samaya Nano bivy bag</li><li>Dyneema drybag containing Montane Ultra Pull-On, Craft thermal tights, OMM Core Beanie, OMM Core socks, buff, 1 x long sleeve top, spare short sleeve top(s), 1 x spare socks, 1 x spare shorts, 1 x spare underwear,</li><li>Personal hygiene kit</li><li>20L Drybag</li><li>Compressport 75/25 waterproof jacket</li><li>Montbell Ultralight wind jacket</li><li>Sunglasses</li><li>Sunscreen</li><li>Waterproof pouch containing passport, cash, bank cards and insurance cover card</li><li>Plastic tripod</li><li>5,000 mah power bank with 3-in-1 cable and Garmin charging adaptor</li><li>Flextail Zero Air Pump</li><li>Petzl Bindi head torch</li><li>Euro adapter plug with USB ports</li><li>Exped clear cube to contain all electronics</li><li>Food bag, contents listed separately</li><li>Titanium cutlery set</li><li>Wipes</li><li>Mobile Phone</li></ol><p>I would travel in a set of running clothing which would be supplemental to the items listed above.</p><p>Food, as pictured separately below.</p><p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-5205 size-large" src="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Food-final-915x1024.webp" alt="" width="915" height="1024" srcset="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Food-final-915x1024.webp 915w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Food-final-268x300.webp 268w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Food-final-768x859.webp 768w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Food-final-1373x1536.webp 1373w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Food-final-1831x2048.webp 1831w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Food-final-1000x1119.webp 1000w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Food-final-230x257.webp 230w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Food-final-350x392.webp 350w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Food-final-480x537.webp 480w" sizes="(max-width: 915px) 100vw, 915px" /></p><p><strong>Total Pack Weight, with flasks but excluding water  &#8211;  5.2 kg</strong></p> </div>

<p>The following is the gear list for this trip.</p><p>The pack is the Instinct Alpi 40 which I have used for several fastpacks, particularly when the load is a little more expansive or just simply bulkier. I am still in two minds about this pack. Although I like the mesh front bottle holders and pockets and I also like the main pack compartment, I am not such a fan of the separate roll-top section or the lid. Both are just about OK with a few lightweight items but anything heavier causes the top of the pack to move too much, independently of the main pack. I see what they were trying to do but it doesn’t really work, in my view. Additionally, I am simply not persuaded that a vest-type design works with a larger capacity pack.</p><p>Although the weather forecast is good overnight, I am also taking a small, lightweight tarp to supplement my bivy set up. I haven’t done this for a long time so I thought I would do something a bit different and it will provide a modicum of protection from any wind or isolated showers.</p><p>Everything else is fairly standard for a late winter/early spring overnighter.</p><p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-5146 size-large" src="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Gear-final-1-963x1024.webp" alt="" width="963" height="1024" srcset="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Gear-final-1-963x1024.webp 963w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Gear-final-1-282x300.webp 282w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Gear-final-1-768x816.webp 768w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Gear-final-1-1445x1536.webp 1445w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Gear-final-1-1927x2048.webp 1927w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Gear-final-1-1000x1063.webp 1000w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Gear-final-1-230x244.webp 230w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Gear-final-1-350x372.webp 350w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Gear-final-1-480x510.webp 480w" sizes="(max-width: 963px) 100vw, 963px" /></p><ol><li>Instinct Alpi 40 backpack</li><li>1 x softflask with Salomon filter</li><li>Tarp with guy lines, pegs and 2 x poles</li><li>Mountain Hardwear Eco AF sleeping bag in a Sea to Summit compression drybag</li><li>Sleeping bag liner</li><li>Inflatable pillow</li><li>Nemo Tensor Extreme sleeping pad</li><li>Samaya Nano Bivy</li><li>Montane Podium waterproof jacket</li><li>Sea to Summit Event drybag containing a Montane Prism Ultra pull-on, thermal tights, Montane dart gloves, OMM Core socks</li><li>Montane Prism cap</li><li>Buff</li><li>35L drybag</li><li>First aid kit, including a compass and Petzl elite.</li><li>Wipes</li><li>Petzl Bindi headtorch</li><li>Garmin i67 handheld satellite device</li><li>Flextail Zero pump</li><li>5,000mah power bank &amp; 3-in-1 charging cord</li><li>LED tent light</li><li>Exped padded bag for all electronics</li><li>Dyneema zipped pouch for cards/cash</li><li>Plastic tripod</li><li>Mobile Phone</li><li>Food bag ( contents listed below)</li></ol><p>My running clothing will be separate from everything listed above.</p><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-5147 size-large" src="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Food-final-1-1024x956.webp" alt="" width="1024" height="956" srcset="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Food-final-1-1024x956.webp 1024w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Food-final-1-300x280.webp 300w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Food-final-1-768x717.webp 768w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Food-final-1-1536x1434.webp 1536w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Food-final-1-2048x1913.webp 2048w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Food-final-1-1000x934.webp 1000w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Food-final-1-230x215.webp 230w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Food-final-1-350x327.webp 350w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Food-final-1-480x448.webp 480w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p><p>The food for the trip, as photographed, includes running calories for Day 2. <p>The following is the gear list for this trip.</p>
<p>The pack is the North Face Trail Lite 36 which I have used for several fastpacks, particularly when the load is a little more expansive or just bulkier. On this occasion, the extra space was needed as I will have a slightly bulkier sleeping bag but more importantly, a tent as well.</p>
<p>The tent is the Marmot Tungsten UL 1P, a great lightweight tent that comes in at about 1.2kg. However, it is side entry and fairly roomy inside compared to other one person tents of similar weight. The only real downside to this tent is its tall but narrow profile which renders it less stable in windy conditions.</p>
<p>The Rab Mythic Ultra 360 sleeping bag is a pricy piece of kit but is good for a degree or two below zero and it is very lightweight and with a small, packed size for that rating.</p>
<p>Everything else is fairly standard for a late winter overnighter in a fairly remote location.</p>

<p>The following is the gear list for this trip. In principle it is a similar gear list to the Alyth to Aviemore outing from last summer as the terrain is similar, as is the overall distance. However, this is an overnight outing in the Scottish hills in winter so there is more kit for safety and overall comfort given the possible temperatures, higher level snow cover and precipitation.</p><p>The pack is the Salomon Peak 20, a great lightweight fastpack. Although crucial kit items are in their own drybags, I will be using a 20L drybag as a pack liner. For items and calories, I will want immediately to hand, I will supplement the pack with a Salomon X-Season waist pack. It sits comfortably at the front, giving ready access on the move.</p><p>The sleeping bag and bivy bag are solely safety contingencies, should I become static or immobilised for any reason. I will be wearing a GoreTex shell throughout along with long tights and waterproof shorts. I will carry waterproof trousers should the rain require them, or I want an extra windproof lower layer. Otherwise, I don’t really like wearing waterproof trousers.</p><p>I will wear one pair of gloves and carry the Salomon Bonatti mitts if I need them. I will have a second pair of gloves and the Sealskinz cap in addition to the gloves and beanie I will wear. I will wear a single pair of waterproof socks throughout.</p><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-4561 size-large" src="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Gear-1-final-829x1024.webp" alt="" width="829" height="1024" srcset="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Gear-1-final-829x1024.webp 829w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Gear-1-final-243x300.webp 243w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Gear-1-final-768x949.webp 768w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Gear-1-final-1243x1536.webp 1243w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Gear-1-final-1657x2048.webp 1657w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Gear-1-final-1000x1236.webp 1000w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Gear-1-final-230x284.webp 230w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Gear-1-final-350x432.webp 350w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Gear-1-final-480x593.webp 480w" sizes="(max-width: 829px) 100vw, 829px" /></p><ol><li>2 x 500ml softflasks with Salomon filter</li><li>Groundsheet</li><li>Samaya Nano Bivy</li><li>Thermarest Hyperion 32 sleeping bag</li><li>20L drybag</li><li>3L compression drybag containing Inov8 Thermoshell top and spare gloves</li><li>Sealskinz waterproof cold weather cap</li><li>Montane Podium waterproof trousers</li><li>YakTrax Run ice grips</li><li>Salomon X-Season waistbelt</li><li>First Aid kit with compass and Petzl E-Lite</li><li>Goggles</li><li>Safety Glow Stick</li><li>Plastic tripod</li><li>Garmin 67i handheld Satellite device</li><li>10,000mah powerbank &amp; 3-in-1 charging cable</li><li>Petzl Swift headtorch &amp; spare battery</li><li>Dyneema bag to contain all electronics</li><li>Food bag ( see below for contents )</li><li>Mobile phone</li></ol><p>My running clothing is entirely separate to everything listed above.</p><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-4562 size-large" src="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Food-final-1024x866.webp" alt="" width="1024" height="866" srcset="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Food-final-1024x866.webp 1024w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Food-final-300x254.webp 300w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Food-final-768x649.webp 768w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Food-final-1536x1298.webp 1536w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Food-final-2048x1731.webp 2048w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Food-final-1000x845.webp 1000w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Food-final-230x194.webp 230w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Food-final-350x296.webp 350w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Food-final-480x406.webp 480w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p><p>Food, as pictured separately. <p>The following is the gear list for this trip.</p><p>The pack is The North Face Trail Lite 36. This is technically a lightweight hiking/alpine backpack, but it has all of the features that make it a very competent, larger capacity, running fastpack. There are two caveats to that which I would highlight. The back length is a tad long which is a bit of an issue for me as I do experience lower back abrasion from some packs. Additionally, the mesh pockets do not accommodate larger soft flasks. This is not a problem however when water will be readily available.</p><p>The tent weighs approximately 1 kg, and it is extremely spacious for such a lightweight tent. It is however single skin which does throw up the usual condensation issues. I have not tested it in heavy rain, but I do not think it would be my tent of choice for those types of conditions. Its other slightly concerning feature is the tent floor which is extremely thin which might be an issue in time for both waterproofing and general durability. I am taking a lightweight groundsheet to use as a footprint for this reason.</p><p>The Aegismax Nano 2 sleeping bag is a nice bag for moderate spring or autumn nights. In my opinion, it is comfortably warm down to about 5 degrees C and compresses fairly well.</p><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-3723 size-large" src="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-2-971x1024.webp" alt="" width="971" height="1024" srcset="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-2-971x1024.webp 971w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-2-284x300.webp 284w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-2-768x810.webp 768w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-2-1456x1536.webp 1456w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-2-1942x2048.webp 1942w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-2-1000x1055.webp 1000w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-2-230x243.webp 230w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-2-350x369.webp 350w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-2-480x506.webp 480w" sizes="(max-width: 971px) 100vw, 971px" /></p><ol><li>The North Face Trail Lite 36 backpack</li><li>1 x 300ml hard bottle, 1 x 350ml soft flask with Salomon filter</li><li>Dyneema 190 x 135cm Groundsheet</li><li>The North Face Tadpole SL 2P tent</li><li>Aegismax Nano 2 sleeping bag in its own compression sac.</li><li>Nemo Tensor Elite sleeping mat</li><li>Sleeping bag liner</li><li>Inflatable pillow</li><li>3L compression drybag containing Inov8 Thermoshell top, TNF tights &amp; OMM Core beanie</li><li>Flextail Zero air pump</li><li>TNF Trail 10K waterproof jacket</li><li>Plastic mini tripod</li><li>First aid kit including Petzl E-lite &amp; Silva compass</li><li>Tent light</li><li>5,000mah powerbank &amp; 3-in-1 charging cable</li><li>Dyneema pouch for electronics</li><li>Garmin 67i handheld satellite device with InReach subscription (forgot to photograph)</li><li>Wipes</li><li>Food bag ( see below for contents )</li><li>Mobile phone</li></ol><p>My running clothing is entirely separate to everything listed above.</p><p>Food, as pictured separately below.</p><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-3724 size-large" src="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-1-1024x1018.webp" alt="" width="1024" height="1018" srcset="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-1-1024x1018.webp 1024w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-1-300x298.webp 300w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-1-150x150.webp 150w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-1-768x764.webp 768w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-1-1536x1527.webp 1536w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-1-2048x2036.webp 2048w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-1-1000x994.webp 1000w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-1-230x229.webp 230w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-1-350x348.webp 350w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-1-480x477.webp 480w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p><p>The pack had plenty of capacity left but as I have said before, I would rather have ease of packing and compress the pack down than try and ram gear into a smaller pack.</p><p>Total pack weight, excluding 700ml of water – <strong>6.0kg.</strong></p> </div>

<p>The following is the gear list for this trip. It is posted after the fact so I have decided to post it before the actual trip report as it might provide some context for what I’ll write about the fastpack thereafter.</p><p>The gear I selected for the trip was based on the principle that my pack would be my aircraft 10kg carry-on and that I would not have a base in Andorra until after I completed the GRP fastpack. Thus, I needed to pack and carry all the kit necessary for a mountain fastpack during which I would bivy, as well as having enough basics to see me through the entirety of the trip thereafter. This is pretty much what I did on both my GR20 and the GR70 fastpacks, so it is a tried and tested concept.</p><p>The pack is the Raidlight Ultra Legend 30. Along with the older Ultra Raid 30 and its little brother (or sister or it could be non-binary, who the f*!k knows!) the Ultra Legend 20, this is in my opinion the best overall fastpack that you could ever lay your hands on. It has everything you could possibly want from a running fastpack, including supreme comfort and stability.</p><p>I went light and compact on the sleeping system, taking the Thermarest Hyperion 32 sleeping bag which compresses to a ridiculously small size considering it is a genuine zero-degree bag. I would need it if bivying at higher altitude.</p><p>I took a range of clothing layers for a wide variation in temperatures, from zero to mid-twenties. Like many alpine environments, the region is prone to afternoon rain or thunderstorms, so a decent waterproof is essential as well as good drybags and a pack cover to keep everything as dry as possible. I would be able to wash stuff once the GRP is done and I had accommodation for the rest of the trip. I would acquire toiletries, cheap T-shirt etc once in town.</p><p>In terms of food, I would be able to supplement the calories I was carrying with meals, snacks etc from the staffed refuges and from the odd small grocery shop I would pass at one or more of the road crossings.</p><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-3151 size-large" src="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-996x1024.webp" alt="" width="996" height="1024" srcset="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-996x1024.webp 996w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-292x300.webp 292w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-768x790.webp 768w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-1493x1536.webp 1493w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-1991x2048.webp 1991w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-1000x1028.webp 1000w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-230x237.webp 230w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-350x360.webp 350w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Gear-final-480x494.webp 480w" sizes="(max-width: 996px) 100vw, 996px" /></p><ol><li>Raidlight Ultra Legend 30L pack</li><li>2 x Salomon 500ml soft flasks with Salomon XA filter (I forgot to photograph!)</li><li>UD waistbelt pouch</li><li>Thermarest Hyperion 32 sleeping bag</li><li>Silk sleeping bag liner</li><li>Dyneema drybag for sleeping bag and liner</li><li>Nemo Tensor Elite Ultralight sleeping mat</li><li>Alpkit Drift pillow</li><li>Alpkit Kloke bivy bag</li><li>Sea to Summit 5L Evac drybag containing Montane Ultra Pull-on, Craft thermal tights, X-Bionic short-sleeve top, Craft sleeveless top, OMM Kamleika waterproof shorts, spare underwear, spare pair of socks, buff, beanie</li><li>Montbell Tachyon wind jacket</li><li>Gloves</li><li>Pack cover</li><li>20L Drybag</li><li>OMM Aether Dyneema waterproof jacket</li><li>Sunglasses</li><li>Sunscreen</li><li>First Aid kit including compass and Petzl e-lite</li><li>Waterproof pouch containing passport, cash, bank cards and insurance cover card</li><li>Plastic tripod</li><li>Garmin 67i handheld satellite device</li><li>10,000 mah power bank with 3-in-1 cable and Garmin charging cable</li><li>Petzl RL Swift head torch with spare battery</li><li>Euro adapter plug with USB ports</li><li>Andorra hiking map</li><li>Dyneema repair cord</li><li>Exped padded bag to contain all electronics</li><li>Food bag, contents listed separately</li><li>Wipes</li><li>Mobile Phone</li></ol><p>I would travel in a set of running clothing which would be supplemental to the items listed above.</p><p>Food items are itemised below. The plastic gel flask was to enable me to purchase and carry other gels for any subsequent runs to the GRP fastpack. I always pre-dispense single gels prior to any run. It enables a little water to be added to ease ingestion and avoids the inevitable hand stickiness which comes from handling open gels on the move. Also, no sticky mess to dispose of.</p><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-3152 size-large" src="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-1024x931.webp" alt="" width="1024" height="931" srcset="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-1024x931.webp 1024w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-300x273.webp 300w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-768x698.webp 768w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-1536x1397.webp 1536w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-2048x1862.webp 2048w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-1000x909.webp 1000w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-230x209.webp 230w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-350x318.webp 350w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Food-final-480x436.webp 480w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p><p><strong>Total Pack Weight, with flasks but excluding water  &#8211;  6.6 kg</strong></p><p>(The food and electronics alone weigh a shade over 2kg, so I think it was not too bad a weight overall, considering what I needed to pack for.)  </p> </div>

<p>The following is the gear list for this trip which I suppose lies on the cusp between a lengthy single-day mountain trip and a very lightweight fastpack. In my view, it is more of the former with a range of kit for the distance, terrain and level of self-sufficiency required. I will be equipped to sleep/rest for short periods, if desired or necessary but there is no extended rest period built into the overall plan.</p><p>The pack is The North Face TR Rocket. This is a 15L running vest/pack with a roll-top and all the bells and whistles one would expect from a larger capacity running pack. I will supplement it with a waistbelt for some of the usual odds and ends I will want immediately to hand.</p><p>Despite the weather forecast, I am taking a waterproof and multiple layers given the variations in time of day, temperature and altitude I will encounter during the course of the trip. I have supplemented the layers I have with an emergency bivy bag and the Sea to Summit Thermolite Extreme liner which I can use as a lightweight sleeping bag should it be required. Everything else is self-explanatory.</p><p>Overall, not a super-lightweight list but I will never compromise on safety and contingencies when taking extended trips into more remote areas, especially overnight.</p><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-2959 size-large" src="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-869x1024.webp" alt="" width="869" height="1024" srcset="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-869x1024.webp 869w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-255x300.webp 255w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-768x905.webp 768w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-1304x1536.webp 1304w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-1738x2048.webp 1738w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-1000x1178.webp 1000w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-230x271.webp 230w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-350x412.webp 350w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-480x566.webp 480w" sizes="(max-width: 869px) 100vw, 869px" /></p><ol><li>2 x TNF 500ml soft flasks with Salomon filter</li><li>1 x Salomon 500ml soft flask for Tailwind mix</li><li>Ultra lightweight 70 x 210cm groundsheet</li><li>SOL Emergency Bivy</li><li>Sea to Summit Thermolite Sleeping bag liner</li><li>Inflatable pillow</li><li>3L compression drybag containing Montane Prism Ultra pull-on top, Craft thermal tights &amp; OMM Core beanie</li><li>TNF 2.5l trail waterproof jacket</li><li>TNF wind jacket</li><li>2 x short sleeve tops</li><li>Buff</li><li>TNF waistbelt</li><li>First Aid kit with compass and Petzl E-Lite</li><li>Safety Glow Stick</li><li>Insect headnet</li><li>Plastic tripod</li><li>Garmin 67i handheld Satellite device</li><li>Petzl Swift RL headtorch with spare battery</li><li>Red safety light</li><li>5,000mah power bank, 3-in-1 charging cable &amp; Garmin cable</li><li>Dyneema bag to contain all electronics</li><li>Sunscreen</li><li>Sunglasses</li><li>Food bag ( see below for contents )</li><li>Mobile phone</li></ol><p>My initial running clothing is entirely separate to everything listed above.</p><p>Food, as pictured separately. <p>The following is the gear list for this trip. The pack is the Dynafit Traverse 22 which is untested as a fastpacking pack, to date. I tried it on prior to the trip, fully laden, and whilst the overall weight and load distribution was fine within the pack, I did have some concerns about the stability of the pack and the amount of potential bounce. This is due to the absence of any means of effectively securing the top of the pack to the shoulder straps at the shoulders. We’ll see how it performed after the trip.</p><p>The rest of the kit is largely a combination of well-used items for a lightweight summer fastpack, with appropriate hill safety gear. The Nemo Tensor Elite Ultralight mat is coming out to play this time as I want to give it a good test with a view to taking it to Andorra in a few weeks. I do have some concerns about its fragility over time but with a bivy and groundsheet between it and the ground, it should be ok. The Alpkit Numo is still a favourite but the Nemo will take some beating when weight and packed size really count. I am also taking the OR bivy on this occasion as the midge situation will be uncertain.</p><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-2880 size-large" src="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-829x1024.jpg" alt="" width="829" height="1024" srcset="https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-829x1024.jpg 829w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-243x300.jpg 243w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-768x948.jpg 768w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-1244x1536.jpg 1244w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-1659x2048.jpg 1659w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-1000x1235.jpg 1000w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-230x284.jpg 230w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-350x432.jpg 350w, https://midpackrunner.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Gear-final-480x593.jpg 480w" sizes="(max-width: 829px) 100vw, 829px" /></p><ol><li>2 x Dynafit 350ml softflasks with Salomon filter</li><li>Groundsheet</li><li>Outdoor Research Alpine Ascent Bivy</li><li>Aegismax Mini sleeping bag</li><li>20L drybag</li><li>Nemo Tensor Elite Ultralight sleeping mat</li><li>Sleeping bag liner</li><li>Inflatable pillow</li><li>3L compression drybag containing Inov8 Thermoshell top, Craft thermal tights &amp; OMM Core beanie</li><li>Dynafit Alpine 2.5l waterproof jacket</li><li>Ultimate Direction waistbelt pouch</li><li>First Aid kit with compass and Petzl E-Lite</li><li>Safety Glow Stick</li><li>Insect headnet</li><li>Plastic tripod</li><li>Flextail Zero air pump</li><li>Garmin 67i handheld Satellite device</li><li>Petzl Bindi headtorch</li><li>5,000mah powerbank &amp; 3-in-1 charging cable</li><li>Exped padded back to contain all electronics</li><li>Food bag ( see below for contents )</li><li>Mobile phone</li></ol><p>My running clothing is entirely separate to everything listed above.</p><p>Food, as pictured separately. <p>The following is the gear list for this trip. The pack is the Salomon Peak 20 which is long obsolete but a great lightweight fastpack nonetheless. As I often say in relation to kit, newer is not always better. Both the Peak 20 and Peak 30 are far superior to the Salomon XA25 and XA35 packs which are both truly awful fastpacks, in my humble opinion of course. I see that Salomon have just released the S/Lab Adventure 20 which might have promise but looking at it, I would take a lot of convincing that they have resolved the instability and bounce issues that plagued the XA packs. Anyway, I digress…</p>
<p>The rest of the gear is pretty lightweight as this is a quick and relatively short bivy trip in overnight temperatures well into double figures. For summer overnights, I think that the Aegismax Mini sleeping bag is brilliant in terms of overall performance and value. (It compresses more than the photo suggests but I left it bulkier to fill out the pack). There are some lighter down bags around that might compress a little smaller or perform marginally better but at significantly more cost.</p>

<p>The following is the gearlist for this trip. The pack is the Montane Ultra Tour 40, a brilliant larger capacity running pack but with one significant flaw; fluid carrying. The contoured, plastic hard bottles are the maximum size that will fit in the shoulder strap mesh pockets and the 750ml softflask with filter is to top up when required and to hydrate overnight. The sleeping bag this time is lighter as temperatures are not forecasted to drop below zero and I will be sleeping indoors. There are a couple of extras as this is a bothy trip. Firstly, a LED light in addition to a contingency headtorch. Secondly, a couple of tealights and a BIC mini lighter for a secondary indoor lighting option.</p>
